It has been three weeks since Depeche Mode performed in the City of Salt. I have yet to write a review, so here it is.
The show was good. That's right, just good. They have had better shows in the past but that's okay. It was still great to see the band I have been following for twenty plus years perform live. Dave Gahan still has all the energy in the world. He still wears the black vest and pants. He still gets sweaty and takes his vest off. He still gets down and dirty with his hips. His skinny, tattooed, half naked sweaty body still has a certain appeal to it.
They played a few songs from their new album. And naturally, they played quite a few songs from previous albums. It was fun to sing along. All in all, it was a fun show to be at.
I do want to mention one part of the show that got quite a few people all worked up during their performance of "Strangelove". As part of their stage setup, they had a large screen. During this particular song, they had some light lesbian porn projected onto this screen. It went something like this: a hot chick in a great lingerie piece walked into a room. Shortly after her arrival, another hot chick in another great piece of lingerie walked in. One started sucking on the others toe, the other got worked up and unfastened her corset. Yep, that's right! We all got to see a boobie being projected on this large screen. The one chick left after a few good sucks on the others large toe. That was it, end of light porn. I read the local paper the next day. The columnist highly criticized the porn. He essentially said that this was not the way to attract the crowd. Okay, I don't totally disagree with what the columnist was saying however, if you are going to be so bothered or shocked by a boobie, then you are listening to the wrong band! What can you expect from a band when they have songs such as Blasphemous Rumors, Condemnation, The Sinner in Me, etc!?!?! They are likely going to do something that involves a little shock factor.
There you have it; review complete! Let the next couple of years go by quickly and may no member of the band die so we can host them in our lovely City of Salt again.

I enjoyed the concert...had a good time. But I have not been a loyal follower over the years. Kind of let it go after college. I tried to get up to speed on their newest album before the concert. All the same, I probably recognized only half of the songs they played. One thing I always liked about DM was the interesting and unique details of their music. And at the concert the bass beat was so loud and driving I felt I lost some of those little details. We had great seats on the floor but when we all stood up to dance the moment DM took the stage...I was still craning my neck trying to see over heads. :) We saw an awful lot of up close details which was fun....but would've had a better overall view of the concert had we been up in the bowl. I thought it was funny to see so many "thirty-somethings" in the same room. Bryan and I shared quite a few chuckles watching some of the people around us get SO into it. We also laughed at Dave's booty shaking. We ended up having to leave during the encore numbers because of kid issues at home. Honestly, I don't remember the porn. Did it happen during one of the encore numbers?
ReplyDeleteAll in all it was a fun concert and I'm glad I went. Had fun dancing to all the songs...cause, honestly, with a beat like that how can you not? :)
